Holy Saturday is the day Christians await at the tomb of Christ in expectation of the Resurrection as he promised. In the Nicene Creed we proclaim every Sunday the words ‘he descended into hell’, and that is what Christ is doing today. He enters Hell. Why? To bring Adam and Eve out of the place of darkness, and in so doing bringing us also. By taking the hand of Adam and Eve, who first sinned Christ is taking our hand and bringing us to the place of light, from light himself. When we gather for the Easter Vigil we continue that journey of darkness to light: Christ comes to bring us light, life, and hope. So if Holy Saturday is a day of darkness and waiting, Easter is a day of joy.
